Animal Shelters in Mexico City

Yesterday I spent time walking & playing with this sweet, rambunctious puppy who currently lives in a local Mexico City shelter, #lacasadelmestizo.

After spending an hour together, his overly-anxious and wild behavior was mellowed with lots of love and guidance and he could enjoy the company of other dogs as he wandered the local dog park, Parque de los Venados.

Animals at shelters don’t get out very often. There are just too many to spend quality time with.

Unlike at many government-run shelters, Dogs at La Casa del Mestizo are given a name (My puppy was so rambunctious we ran off before the shelter could give me his name, but soon found out it Artico!) and a place where they are treated with respect and love.

Not all animals in Mexico have this luck. About 25 million pets live on the streets of Mexico City, more than in the rest of Latin America. Many will be killed because they will never be adopted.

In each country I visit, I attempt to give back in some way, leaving a #PositiveImpact on the community that I’m in.

Here in Mexico City, spending just a few hours volunteering to be with these abandoned animals fuels my spirit (my dog child of 15 years passed on December 22 and I miss him EVERY day) and provides some much-needed support for the overpopulation of these animals. When you travel, consider finding a local (and ethical) shelter to volunteer at.

You and the animals will appreciate it.
